The Old Guard 2 was initially anticipated to premiere this year on Netflix, but fans are beginning to worry it might not arrive as expected. It’s been nearly two years since filming wrapped for the sequel to The Old Guard—a standout action film on Netflix—but the streaming service has yet to announce a release date. The sequel was notably absent from Netflix’s 2024 release slate announced in February 2024, which raises concerns.
However, there’s still hope. Netflix has indicated that more movie releases will be announced for this year, so The Old Guard 2 could still make the cut.
In February 2024, star Matthias Schoenaerts shared that the film is in the final stages of post-production. “We shot it around a year and a half ago, and I believe they are now in the final phase of editing,” Schoenaerts said. He also mentioned potential delays due to a change in Netflix’s upper management, which might affect the release schedule.
Recently, Netflix canceled Halle Berry’s sci-fi film The Mothership due to post-production delays, leading to worries that The Old Guard 2 could face similar issues. Nevertheless, given the success of the first film, there’s still optimism about its release.
In the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about The Old Guard 2.
The Old Guard 2 Release Date: When Can We Expect It?
As of June 2024, The Old Guard 2 does not have a confirmed release date on Netflix.
The first film debuted in July 2020 and quickly became a hit, leading many to expect the sequel would follow in July 2023. Unfortunately, that timeline has passed without a new release date.
Filming for the sequel took place between June and September 2022 in locations like Italy and the UK. Assuming there are no additional reshoots, the film should be nearing completion. Although it wasn’t included in Netflix’s 2024 release slate, the sequel’s anticipated release may still be forthcoming.
Producer Marc Evans hinted at the possibility of a third film, stating in May 2023, “The ending of the sequel strongly suggests a third installment, which is exciting.” However, he did not confirm its production.
Victoria Mahoney has stepped in as the director, replacing Gina Prince-Bythewood, who remains on board as a producer. The main cast members are returning for another action-packed adventure, and Greg Rucka, who wrote the original comic book series, has returned to pen the sequel.
The Old Guard 2 Cast: Who’s Returning?
The core cast from the first film will return for the sequel. Charlize Theron reprises her role as Andy, with KiKi Layne as Nile, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Marwan Kenzari as Joe, and Luca Marinelli as Nicky.
Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character Copley, who was left to ensure the team’s safety, will also return. It’s uncertain whether his role will be significant or more peripheral.
Veronica Ngo is set to return as Quynh, although it’s unclear if she will be an ally or antagonist this time. The character was originally named Noriko in the comics but was changed to reflect Ngo’s Vietnamese heritage, a decision endorsed by Greg Rucka.
We may also see more of Micheal Ward as Lykon, who died in flashbacks. His story could provide further context to Andy and Quynh’s past.
Uma Thurman and Henry Golding are confirmed to join the cast, though their roles remain undisclosed. Their characters’ alignments—friend or foe—are yet to be revealed.
The Old Guard Ending: How Does It Set Up the Sequel?
The ending of The Old Guard includes a crucial post-credits scene where we find Booker in Paris, six months after his betrayal. He encounters Quynh, who has inexplicably returned from the depths of the ocean.
The sequel will likely address Quynh’s motivations and her intentions towards Andy and her team.
Greg Rucka’s second The Old Guard comic, Force Multiplied, also starts with Quynh’s return and explores her belief that immortality was a curse rather than a blessing. This storyline suggests she might want Andy to join her in a quest that could put them at odds.
Moreover, Andy is now seemingly mortal after a previous injury failed to heal, introducing new stakes to her ongoing battles. This significant change from the comics could add new dimensions to the sequel’s narrative.
Lastly, Theron will reportedly sport a new hairstyle for the sequel to reflect the passage of time. “We needed a look that signified time had moved on, so we went with a mullet,” Theron explained.
The Old Guard 2 Trailer: Is There Any Footage Yet?
While filming for The Old Guard 2 is complete, it may be some time before we see any footage. With no release date yet, fans will have to wait for the first teaser or trailer to drop, which might not happen until closer to the film’s release.
